Forests in our valley have thousands of old growth walnut trees. These all belong to the species - Juglans regia - the most widespread walnut tree species that is endemic from the Balkans to the Himalayas and Southwest China. These trees must have been propagated to our primary forests over millennia by birds and animals. You find these trees, some over 150ft tall, in clusters in the middle of forests, between altitudes 5,000 ft to 10,000 ft AMSL. These trees bear fruit in late autumn and by early winter the ground beneath these trees is littered with hundreds of walnuts. Local shepherds collect these walnuts to snack on. They bring sacks of these walnuts back home for their families and children. Children especially enjoy these walnuts as cracking them is good fun. These walnuts are regularly eaten during our winter village festivals as it is given to guests.

These walnuts are very thick-shelled and require some hard work to crack, but at the end of it is a very intense flavored kernel. It is quite normal to keep cracking these nuts to get bits of the kernel as it is so yummy! These nuts are therefore perfect for a weekend of family fun!
