Kinnaur is the last district of Himachal before Tibet, a high, dry, dramatic land of mountain villages where apple orchards climb from 6,000 ft to altitudes above 10,000 ft, higher than anywhere else in India. Why Kinnaur Apples Taste Different
Altitude is time. In the lower apple belts, fruit ripens in 100 to 120 days. In Kinnaur’s high orchards, the cold stretches the season, and an apple hangs on the branch for 130 to 150 days. Those extra weeks of sharp sunny days and near-freezing nights do slow, patient work: more sugar laid down, denser flesh, deeper colour. The Sutlej gorge also puts these orchards in a rain shadow, so the fruit grows in dry mountain air and stays firm and crunchy in a way wetter belts cannot match.
The result is a Red Delicious at full power: deep crimson skin, dense cream-white flesh that snaps loudly, generous juice, and a rich, honeyed sweetness with a clean finish.
