Description
Organic Pahadi Karela Pickle is a special from our mountains!
The Pahadi Karela also called RamKarela or Kantola, is grown extensively in the middle altitude belts from Sikkim to Himachal Pradesh himalayas. It is not well know outside the himalayas as it is mostly grown for self-consumption. It also has a very small fruiting period – only once a year at the beginning of autumn i.e. the first week of October.
The locals love it for its taste – as its not bitter, its easy to cook as a subzi and is extremely nutritious.
This plant belongs to the family of creepers and vines called Cyclanthera pedata. Its origins are unknown but the earliest records of it are from the Andes mountains in Peru. This family of plants are found in mountainous areas of South America, Africa & Asia. Everywhere it is consumed as a vegetable by local communities.
This karela is subject to many scientific studies where it has been known to be beneficial to people suffering from hypertension and diabetes. Consumption of this karela is encouraged in Ayurveda and many people in North India request this vegetable from remote areas in the season.
This vegetable requires very less space to grow and almost no manure as it is very hardy. There are no pests that attack this plant, so its completely organically grown. It is usually planted as a hedge.
This year we decided to promote cultivation of this vegetable and turn it into a pickle so that it can be consumed all round the year!
